As the old story goes, I was a sailor on leave and that is about all that I need to say. Me and some buddies headed off to town and came back with a tattoo. Today, its different. The world of tattooing has changed greatly for tattoo artists. No longer are they solely found in the run down and unsavory areas of a city or in prisons, even though there are still those who do their tattooing in such places. Tattoo artists are now working in the better neighborhoods as well.

Nowadays there is a greater acceptance of tattoing and appreciation for the wonders that can be created on the human skin. Prime time television has shows following the lives of prominent tattoo artists, and most major cities have at least one tattoo convention each year.
